AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM

Shortly after the French painters abandoned the rigidity of history painting to render their fleeting impressions of daily life, American painters left the teeming industrial centers of America to capture the qualities of rural life which they felt were waning at the opening of the 20th century. These publications are part of the Museum’s ongoing commitment to explore themes relating to the American Impressionist movement.

THE LYME ART COLONY

In 1899, Henry Ward Ranger discovered Lyme. When traveling through this historic village on a train, he exclaimed that this was a place “just waiting to be painted.” He found the boarding house of Miss Florence Griswold, spread the word among his artist friends, and soon they were producing luminous paintings of white clapboard buildings, meandering marshes, and rocky meadows. And so began the Lyme Art Colony. These publications, in many cases the only monographic study available on a featured artist, tell the story of those artists who found their inspiration in Lyme.
