Thank you for the astounding show of David Brown's. He is in good
company with the french impressionist. It is so exciting to see where
this genre has gone with a living artist. I hope you can extend this
show and get the word out about this inspired artist. I will do my
part with word of mouth. Ashley Roland

Last Sunday I visited your museum and in particular the exciting exhibit
of Dave Brown's Hay House. What a wonderful and contemporary addition
to your generally traditional displays. There have been a number of
very positive newspaper articles describing the HayHouse. It seems
to me that there is still a public which hasn't had the opportunity
to see it and that you should extend its display beyond the fourteenth
of Novemer to make sure that all who are interested can view it. Thank
you for giving us this great experience.

My husband and I visited the Lyme Art Association's gallery in June
'03. While there we purchased a small booklet that was published for
the commemorative exhibit of the original members of Florence Griswold's
group.
Recently while on a field trip with many of my local artist friends
I shared that booklet, then -- I lost that booklet! Oh, my. I surely
would like to buy another copy. It contained so much history about
the group and photos of so many of the artists. Is it still available?
Or does anyone have a copy they would be willing to part with?
Thank you very much. mckr3441@earthlink.net

Hello, We are a small girl scout troop of 15 and 16 year olds. We
would be interested in visiting the museum. Is the Krieble museum
on the same grounds as the Florence Griswold? Is it reasonable to
visit both on the same excursion?Thank you in advance.

Your museum was recommended to me by Gildy Cummings of CT. I hope
to meet with her soon regarding a watercolor by C.E. Porter, dated
1878, of a large and small butterfly. It was left to me by my mother.
I would very much like to bring this piece for someone at the Museum
to see.
Thank you.

I somehow wound up at the CT Museums site, clicked on the Griswold
link - hoping to find something on Rob't Brackman, with whom Lloyd
Cunningham studied. I don't know that either artist was an Old Lyme
colonist - only that they were S. CT painters. As a boy of ten I went
to Lyme once with Cunningham, who was my mother's cousin, and who
got me started as an artist when he gave me a painting set when I
was 11.
BTW, the onsite index link didn't work so I'll be back for another
try at a later time.

Having been an observer of the Florence Griswold Museum for many years
I wanted to express my appreciation for an outstanding job all of
you have done in promoting the arts from this very important time
in American Art. Miss Griswold must have been an amazing person, and
a savior to the artists that were lucky enough to cross her path.
My only criticism is that artists today are not offered a similiar
hospitality and/or encouragement for their own creativity that started
it all. I would think that your museum would prefer to perpetuate
these things Miss Griswold began, instead of the more social oriented
events you hold today. Impressionism during her time was an abstract
style and today's "Lyme Colony" should encourage this type
of artistic growth as well. I truly believe this would give your organization
more integrity. The pioneers in the Lyme Colony would truly be proud
to see a supportive organization perpetuating Miss Griswold's idea
for a haven along the Connecticut River in which to create. Not to
mention exclaiming joyfully, "it's about time they started living
in the present!"

FYI---I would like to offer some additions and corrections to your
listing under Ivan Olinsky, my grandfather. The bedspread and pillows
were crocheted by my grandmother, Genevieve Olinsky, wife of Ivan.
The picture shown in reference to a painting we gave the Griswold
of a red-headed woman in a green skirt is not that picture and my
mother's name is Leonore, not Lenore. There are also several Olinsky
paintings not mentioned, including a marvelous portrait of a young
woman from the Hartford Steamboiler collection.

What a wonderful visit with informative exhibits and friendly people.
One comment: The painting on the second floor of the Florence Griswold
House by Gregory Smith (1880-1961) has dates listed incorrectly on
the informational and biographical plaque adjacent to the painting.
Those dates read something like 1840-186?. Please check. Otherwise,
expertly done and very professional.

I used to teach in CT and was familiar with the Florence Griswold
Museum, which I loved. I am a French teacher (and French) and always
try to make my students aware that Impressionism was not just a French
phenomenon. I am now teaching in Pasadena, California and I am doing
research on American Impressionism. I am now more familiar with california
Impressionism and would like to go back to learning about Impressionism
on the East Coast. I have 2 questions:How does one apply to a Summer
Institute for teachers in Mid-August? and Does the museum sell slides?
I would be very grateful for your help on these matters.Thanking you!

I lived in CT for 28 years. About 10 years ago I visited your museum
and bought a poster of a painting by Wm. Chadwick of a women with
a hat sitting at a table alone on a porch with a garden behind her.
There is a cup and a glass on the table with her and she's looking
down. I had that poster framed and have enjoyed it all these years.
Unfortunately, it has faded quite a bit. We would like to replace
that poster with the same or simliar image to remind me of my visit
to your museum and of CT which I miss. The poster size is 30"
wide by 24 or 25" high. Is there a way of seeing your posters
in your museum shop? Your web site doesn't allow me to view your posters.

I have been trying to view the Boiler collection of 175 pictures.
There is some problem with the page in that only half of the subjects

me that they would consult their web designer but the problem persists.
I hope you will be able to rectify the problems so that we can enjoy

Dear ladies and gentlemen,
After
a trip through the Baltic in June 2003 and many talks with my mother
and my aunt I would like to know more about the artist/painter Rudolf
Scheffler, who worked at Miss Florence Griswolds House in the early
20's of the last century. - Mr. Rudolf Scheffler was born in D-Zwickau
in 1884 as son of Alwin and Marie Scheffler and as brother of 5
sisters (Helene, Lotte, Fritz, Alfred, Gerhard). One sister, Helene,
was my grandmother who died 1977 in D-Ingolstadt. My mother Christa
and auntie Inge (nieces of uncle Rudolf) mentioned so many details
about his life. After my Baltic holidays, where I could visit uncle
Rudolfs old mill in Wieck auf Darss (peninsula) I am very fond of
his paintings which I only saw in the little American booklet discovered.
- Is there any possibility to acquire one of his flowers paintings
in America or do you have any addresses in Europe, preferably in
Germany, where I could ask for?
Thank
you in advance for your understanding and your response. Best regards
from Switzerland, Ina Brandenberger

I've been going to the Museum for years, and I think one of my former
students, Susan Spivack-Bennett is/was associated with you. A great
museum!! However, make the dates of temporary exhibitionss (Hartford
Steam Boiler) more easily found..

Hello, Hello,
I'll regret not visiting your fine museum again soon as the Griswold
Family Association will be convening in Old Lyme the first part of
August, but I'm spreading the word. I'll have my siblingd pick up
some more notecards. My uncle is Donald Griswold, a past president
of the association. They have a nice educational aspect which awards
scholarships. I sahall include my sister Mary Ann Adkison's e-mail;
this will be her first trip to Old Lyme. Thankyou.
Yours, Peter Hooten (son of Janet
Adams Griswold)

We have just relocated to the area from Boston and are delighted to
know that you are so close! Our 5 year old daughter is a blossoming
young artist and your children's programs sound better than anything
we had in greater Boston! Thank you.

Your assistance please....as I was reading Maine Antique Digest this
month I came across the article, "Famous Connecticut Art Collection....."
and it made me think of a landscape oil painting I have as done by
Evelyn Layh Sears. Can you assist me, please, with any history of
her and her artisitic talent? In appreciation,...Michael

We visited your museum, the house, and gardens today, and were delighted.
Thank you.
One
question: Can you tell us, please: what's the low-growing, doily-like
white flower in the garden now (May 17)?

My Mother told my sister and I as we were growing up , of the artists
and their paintings. They would come to
her Grandparent's home (now known as the Old Lyme Inn) across the
street from the Griswold house
and set up their canvases and paint. I love coming to this site, I
can almost see it, I would have liked to. Hope
to come there someday and see my Mother's and family, hometown.

Message for Lisa Kenyon, where did you find those small masonite paint
palettes that you use in the studio barn? I am planning next years
budget and have not seen them anywhere. Just curious if you know where
they came from. Thanks again for our wonderful visit (Portland Middle
School) - Ann-Marie

I find myself writing a book on the life of a US Naval officer who
was born in North Parish,New London in 1772 and who had an important
role in the South American wars of independence.I'd require if possible
a map showing how was North Parish (actually Montville)at that time.
This man received a great influence from Roger Griswold from Lyme
and it would be great if you could send me a picture of this last.My
apologize for the nuisances.
