Henry C. White (1861-1952)
Fall Landscape, 1891
Oil on board, 16 x 26”
Signed lower right

White, a Hartford native, was especially fond of spring and fall. He probably painted this scene at Waterford, the town he discovered in 1891 and returned to most summers until 1914, when he moved there year-round.

A Tonalist, White would have sketched outdoors, probably in pastel, then painted this scene in his studio. A harmony of russet tones dominates, and light is articulated in part by the shadows it casts. The broadly painted color patches, however, recall those in early French Impressionism.
