Warner was an established artist when he came to Old Lyme in 1909. In 1910, he stayed on into the winter and began using higher-keyed colors, brisker brushstrokes, and heavier impasto. Old Lyme helped him develop his mature style. Circumstances took him elsewhere after 1917, but he returned often.

National disasters twice interrupted his career. He developed a marine camouflage system for the Navy in World War I and headed its camouflage division in World War II. In the years between, he taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
