W. Tryon (1849-1925) Evening Autumn, 1914 Oil on panel, 16 x 24 Signed and dated lower left A line of slender trees silhouetted against a hazy sky was Tryons motif. He was as aware of the transforming power of light as any Impressionist but was attracted to natures delicate moments, which begged for muted tones and evocative half-lights. A Hartford native, Tryon headed the art faculty at Smith College for many years and for a time also directed the Hartford Art School. Mark Twain had tried to talk him out of so risky a career as art. Happily, Tryon had not listened. |
