In the mid-19th century, still-life and genre paintings, with their everyday subject matter, were popular in America. Several Connecticut artists specialized in them. Without the need to move about, as early portrait and landscape painters had done, they established “show” studios in order to display their paintings and develop a local clientele. Often that meant that they were not well-known outside the cities where they worked. Several artists of distinction, however, have been rediscovered in recent years. >next
