Life and Genre : 1 In the mid-19th century, still-life and genre paintings, with their everyday subject matter, were popular in America. Several Connecticut artists specialized in them. Without the need to move about, as early portrait and landscape painters had done, they established show studios in order to display their paintings and develop a local clientele.
