Artists also gathered in Westport, Norwalk, Darien, Wilton, Essex, Kent,
and other towns. Trains had helped establish the art colonies at Cos Cob,
Old Lyme, and Mystic. When automobiles became common, Connecticuts
art colonies developed into much larger art associations, which grew up
in cities and towns throughout the state and did not need a core of artist
residents in order to thrive. >next
