The
Art Colony at Old Lyme : 3
The Old Lyme colony was a force in American art until the mid-1920s, when
new ideas eclipsed the sunny art of American Impressionism. American artists
continued to come to Connecticut -- to Silvermine, Westport, Norwalk,
Kent, and other places. Arthur Dove pioneered abstract art in Connecticut,
John Steuart Curry forged Regionalism, and others addressed Social Realism,
Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. In Connecticut, artists
and residents can still live close to nature yet have access to urban
art centers, new imagery, and new ideas. End.
