Emil
Carlsen (1853-1932)
Night, Old Windham, 1904
Oil on canvas, 50 1/2 x 40
Signed and dated lower right
A superb still-life painter, Danish-born Carlsen became a landscapist
as well when he began summering in Connecticut in 1896. At first he stayed
at artist J. Alden Weirs place in Windham Center, in the east. From
1905, he had his own home in Falls Village, in the northwest.
The cottage depicted here is probably the one that Weir lent the Carlsen
family for several summers. Connecticut Impressionists often painted moonlight
views. Childe Hassam gave continuing rain as one reason. Night scenes
were, of course, done indoors.
