Emil Carlsen (1853-1932)
Behind the Artist’s Studio
Oil on canvas, 18” x 24”
Signed lower right

Impressionists often painted views out their studio windows or even views of the studio itself. Carlsen’s Connecticut home and studio were in Falls Village.

He was active in the art groups that developed nearby at Lime Rock and Kent but stayed close to other Connecticut friends, especially J. Alden Weir, Childe Hassam, and Willard Metcalf. The exchange of ideas, the helpful criticism, and emotional support that artists in Connecticut gave one another nurtured them both in the communal art colonies and in their personal friendships.
