Matilda Browne (1869-1947)
Saltbox by Moonlight
Oil on canvas, 14 x 10”
Signed lower right

An important member of the Lyme Art Colony, Browne was also active in Greenwich, where she lived for many years. In her native New Jersey, her first teacher had been the landscapist Thomas Moran. Later she studied with other noted artists in America, France, and Holland.

She is known for her images of cows, but Browne also painted flowers and Colonial architecture. Trees surround this old house in a protective embrace, while a glowing window reminds us that this is not just a house but a home.
