EDUCATION

Griswold House Docents continue a legacy that was started when Miss Florence guided visitors around her home, showing off the painted panels left by her artistic boarders. Today, a corps of knowledgeable docents offer 30-minute tours of the historic areas of the house that explain the course of events that laid the groundwork for the development of one of America's best-known artist colonies.

Time commitment: Responsibilities are year round; training held throughout the year. House docents have a minimum of two shifts a month, ranging from 3 1/2 to 4 hours per shift.

Garden Docents tell the story of the Lyme Art Colony from an out-of-doors perspective. They offer tours of the restored historic gardens and riverfront grounds explaining how the terrain was instrumental in luring the painters to Old Lyme. These tours also feature the architecture of the site including the Griswold House, Hartman Education Center, Krieble Gallery, Marshfield House and Chadwick Studio.

Time Commitment: Responsibilities from April through October; initial training held in June.

Educators work with school-aged children leading fun and informative student-centered tours of the historic areas of the Griswold House as well as interactive tours of the exhibitions. Educators are hands-on teachers who also lead art-based projects in the Hartman Education Center and during outreach events.

Time Commitment: Responsibilities are year round; training held throughout the year.

Art Gallery Docents are trained to give highlight tours of the current exhibitions in the Krieble Gallery. Working as a democratic team of learners, the Art Gallery Docents research and teach each other about the art on view in preparation for public touring. Training in Multiple Intelligence Theory, Storytelling, and Visual Thinking Strategy come together with more traditional art historical training to create an array of distinctive and informative visitor friendly tours.

Time Commitment: Responsibilities are year round; training held throughout the year.

Gallery docents give a single tour on a set day/time of each week.

Education Interns: The Museum's Education Department is willing to tailor an internship experience for interested students from local high schools and nearby colleges. Interns receive experience while working on a number of important museum projects along side professional Museum staff.

Time commitment: Scheduled throughout the year.
