ArtVenture Camp
Mid-June through Early August, 10am-3pm
These 5-day camps are geared for children going into grades 1 through 6 with a budding interest in the visual arts. Experiential in nature, the camps approach the arts in a hands-on, learner-based manner. Campers are introduced to the story of Miss Florence and the artists of Old Lyme through visits to the historic areas of the Griswold House. Throughout the week, rudiments of art (color, line, and form) are discussed and practiced through a variety of engaging art projects. The week features several visits to the Museum's art galleries as well as interaction with a visiting artist-in-residence. The week's endeavors are championed in a final Art Show to which the families of the campers are invited.
Scholarships for residents of New London for the ArtVenture camps have been generously provided through the Frank Loomis Palmer Fund of New London.
Featured guest artists-in-residence have included: Flock Theatre, puppetry; Brad Guarino, visual artist; and Peter Hawes, precussionist.
Teddy Bear Tea Parties
Offered Seasonally
Share teatime with your little one. Enjoy stories, crafts, yummy FUNwiches, and treats. Children can bring their favorite stuffed animal.
Little Pictures & Big Ears
Offered during select months
Geared for preschool-aged children and their caregivers, these monthly programs provide exposure to the Museum galleries in a fun and age-appropriate manner. Each month, a Star Reader of the Day selects a variety of children's books to be read in the gallery. The selections are often based on the art on view or the seasons of the year. After the reading, the participants move to the Hartman Education Center for a hands-on art project that connects directly to the main story of the day. Books recently featured at Little Pictures include Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh using watercolors to create creative and colorful clothespin butterflies.
A selection of books and projects includes the following:
Book: Philippe in Monet's Garden by Lisa Jobe Carmake and Once Upon a Lilly Pad by Joan Sweeny
Project: Acrylic painting on wooden frogs.
Book: The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry
Project: Decorated rain sticks
Book: Katie Meets the Impressionists by James Maybew and One of Each by Mary Ann Hoberman
